What happens

On the Platte River in Nebraska, the sky fills with sandhill cranes rattling 'garooo-a-a-a' as they land on the sandbars, half a million of them. A bald eagle watches, deer graze, the cranes start jumping and dancing so the ball bounces from crane to crane, and at sunrise they all lift off together.

Fun facts

  • Sandhill cranes are one of the oldest kinds of birds still alive today.
  • Cranes jump and flap when they dance.
  • Sandhill cranes have a bright red cap on their heads.
